The Full Review

PLOT & PACING
From the moment Jet’s murder happens to the final reveal, the ticking clock of her expected aneurysm keeps the story urgent. This murder mystery is layered with plenty of Jackson’s trademark twists, but the dread of knowing Jet’s time is running out gives the book its relentless drive.

CHARACTER & VOICE
Jet is the absolute standout. You can’t help but fall in love with her self-deprecating humor that slowly transforms into real self-love, and her false bravado that cracks open into genuine courage. Her dynamic with Billy adds both levity and depth, showing how much we hide behind our facades until life (or death) forces us to be real. Secondary relationships add heartache and bittersweetness as friendships are rekindled and others are lost forever.

STYLE & ATMOSPHERE
Jackson balances dread and urgency with her sharp, accessible style. The result is cinematic — snappy dialogue and darkly funny moments punctuate the heavy subject matter, keeping the story from sinking under its own weight.

THEMES & DEPTH
At its core, this isn’t just a “whodunit.” It’s a meditation on identity, mortality, and the courage it takes to live authentically — especially when you’re forced to stare down your own ending. The layers of family, friendship, and self-discovery give the thriller real emotional heft.

PERSONAL TAKE
This one hooked me hard. It’s twisty and fun, but what really stayed with me was Jet’s voice: vulnerable, funny, brave. The murder mystery is satisfying, but the real payoff is watching Jet and Billy discover who they truly are beneath their own facades—and learning to be bold enough to pave their own way.

The Final Verdict

Dark, witty, and steeped in dread, Not Quite Dead Yet is more than just a thriller —
it’s a story about learning to love yourself, even when your days are numbered.
