THE FULL REVIEW

PLOT & PACING

The controlled chaos of The Lowe Job, and ultimately Lydia Lowe, means this story hits the ground running and doesn’t slow down. It’s snappy. Unputdownable. Fast and bingeable like a reality TV show or a juicy celebrity exposé. Grace Alexander’s debut novel starts off with the paparazzi catching the eldest Lowe daughter in a compromising position with her boss, an up-and-coming politician. Instead of letting her daughter lose everything she’s worked for- her career in politics and her dignity – Lydia hatches a brilliant plan to capitalize on the scandal, spinning the narrative in favor of the four women she cares most about.

CHARACTER & VOICE

Alexander’s sharp wit and satirical tone allow her to deliver a biting commentary on the modern celebrity culture and political landscape. The storytelling feels like a peek behind the curtain of a high-stakes public relation crisis and despite the comedic chaos, the underlying voice is deeply empathetic toward the women navigating systemic sexism and media cruelty.

As it is in life, all of the members of the Lowe family have their own voice, their own issues, their own views on the world and all of these differences combine to form a beautifully realistic (okay, slightly over-the-top) family just trying to survive each day as they come.

STYLE & ATMOSPHERE

The book crackles with the nervous, frantic energy of a 24-hour news cycle and non-stop paparazzi intrusion and despite the glamourous setting, the pervasive presence of camera crews creates an intense sense of having nowhere to hide. But, beneath the surface noise of the media circus, this story is grounded by the fierce and protective bond between the Lowe sisters and the doting mother.

THEMES & DEPTH

While The Lowe Job has both romance and comedic elements, this isn’t your traditional rom-com. It tackles the heavy psychological toll of constant public exposure as the characters try desperately to keep their real selves separate from their public personas.

The story also explores the complete artificiality of reality television – the walls between authentic human emotion and highly produced, manufactured entertainment eloquently deconstructed, piece by piece.

PERSONAL TAKE

It is an absolute page-turner that hilariously blurs the lines between reality and fiction. Driven by lightning-fast quick wit and powerful themes of woman-power, it delivers a sharp, addictive story that I simply couldn’t put down.

THE FINAL VERDICT

The Lowe Job has easily earned a spot as one of my favorite reads. It’s an epic debut about powerful women and their love and dedication to one another.

Read it. You won’t regret this one.

PLOT & PACING
This story unfolds like a bruise—slow at first, then spreading in sharp, dark bursts. The plot is rooted in a horrifying truth, and once the tension builds, it doesn’t let go. There’s a deep ache under every twist, and yet, you keep reading because you have to know how it ends.

CHARACTERS & VOICE
The characters in Such Quiet Girls are complicated, scarred, and achingly human. Your feelings about them will shift—maybe more than once. And that’s the point. These aren’t caricatures of victims or heroes—they’re survivors, every one of them, and they speak loudest when no one’s listening.

WRITING STYLE & ATMOSPHERE
The prose is clear and emotionally grounded, letting the weight of the story speak for itself. Ihli’s writing is haunting without being heavy-handed, and the atmosphere teeters between suffocating and quietly defiant.

THEMES & DEPTH
Some trauma stories show you the pain. This one shows you what happens after. It challenges assumptions, reveals judgment, and gently insists that there’s more than one kind of hero—and more than one way to survive.

PERSONAL TAKE
I went into this with other people’s opinions in my head—and left with a whole new understanding. The story tore me up, then offered just enough hope to piece me back together. It’s one of the most emotionally intense books I’ve read, and one I won’t forget anytime soon.

The Final Verdict

Quiet doesn’t mean weak. Such Quiet Girls is a testament to the strength we don’t always see—and the stories we should never judge too soon.

PLOT & PACING
This isn’t a story told for shock value—it’s a lived experience, recounted with grace and urgency. The pacing reflects the long, slow burn of survival and the sudden sparks of revelation. It moves like life does: uneven, painful, and real.

CHARACTER & VOICE
Tia’s voice is steady, thoughtful, and sharp with clarity. She’s not only a survivor—she’s a storyteller. The people in her life, from controlling husband to complicit church leaders, aren’t exaggerated. They’re exactly as chilling as real life can be.

STYLE & ATMOSPHERE
Beautifully written, with an artist’s soul and a survivor’s precision. The writing never feels melodramatic—it’s restrained and powerful, with metaphors that bloom like bruises. The atmosphere is quietly terrifying, but always laced with hope.

THEMES & DEPTH
This memoir confronts patriarchy, indoctrination, and identity with honesty and empathy. It asks: What happens when you’re told submission is sacred? What happens when you start to question the script? The themes run deep—and they hit hard.

PERSONAL TAKE
My husband asked me how it was. I still can’t find the right words. A Well-Trained Wife is horrifying and full of healing. Beauty and ashes. Unreadable and unputdownable. I’m in awe of Tia’s bravery, and proud to stand with other women who are learning to be resilient together.

The Final Verdict

Part survival story, part spiritual reckoning, A Well-Trained Wife is a quiet act of rebellion—and a roaring call for freedom.

The Quick Look

In a hidden corner of 18th-century London, a secret apothecary brews justice for women wronged by men. Centuries later, a modern woman discovers that sometimes the most dangerous thing you can do is reclaim your life.

  • Themes: Female Friendship, Self-Discovery, Societal Expectations, Lost Dreams, Empowerment (and yes, Poison)
  • Read If You Like: The Midnight Library, Circe, or historical fiction with a feminist edge and a little magic.
  • Best for: Lovers of historical fiction, feminist themes, and dual-timeline storytelling.
  • Skip if: You need high fantasy or heavy action—this one is more subtle and emotional than plot-driven.

The Full Review

PLOT & PACING:
Told in dual timelines, the story follows Nella and Eliza in 1791 London—one a secret apothecary serving wronged women, the other a curious young girl caught in a growing web—and Caroline in present-day London, reeling from personal betrayal and unfulfilled dreams. The pacing is tight and purposeful across both timelines, with each chapter weaving tension, revelation, and emotional weight without dragging.

CHARACTER & VOICE:
Each woman has her own quiet fire. Nella is hardened but aching. Eliza is wide-eyed and determined. Caroline is questioning everything, and her unraveling is one of the book’s most relatable arcs. You’ll root for them all—for different reasons, in different ways. Their voices are distinct, authentic, and compelling.

STYLE & ATMOSPHERE:
Sarah Penner’s writing is transportive. Whether you’re in a cramped backroom of an apothecary shop or wandering the banks of the Thames, the setting feels immersive without being over-described. The tone strikes a balance between wistful and sharp, grounded in emotional realism with a hint of the magical.

THEMES & DEPTH:
The novel explores how dreams are deferred—by circumstance, by society, by fear—and how easily a life that looks “perfect” from the outside can feel hollow. It’s about what happens when women support each other, when they choose boldness over silence, and when they step out of the lives they’ve settled for to pursue the ones they want. And also? It’s about poisoning the patriarchy. Which is just fun.

PERSONAL TAKE:
This was a total win for me. I loved the balance between history and present day, and how each storyline reflected different facets of the same truth: that you don’t have to stay stuck. It’s feminist lit that doesn’t feel preachy—just powerful. I’d recommend it to anyone who’s ever wondered if they gave up too much to fit someone else’s mold. I want all the women in my life to read this and feel the freedom to pursue a life they’re proud to have.

The Final Verdict

Empowering, atmospheric, and filled with fierce women—The Lost Apothecary is a beautifully woven tale of rediscovery, revenge, and reclaiming your story.
